The drama tells the story of Wang Huiwu, a girl from the ancient water town of Wuzhen in Jiangnan. Witnessing the oppression of women by feudal ethics, she becomes an advocate for women's liberation. She pursues her studies in Jiaxing, Huzhou, and elsewhere before returning to her hometown to establish a girls' school. Later, she goes to Shanghai, where she meets and marries Li Da, one of the co-founders of the Communist Party of China, and together they engage in revolutionary activities. When the First National Congress of the Communist Party of China convenes in Shanghai, she is responsible for logistics and security. To evade a police raid, she suggests moving the congress to a pleasure boat on South Lake in Jiaxing. Wang Huiwu thus becomes a witness to the founding of the Communist Party of China.
